Why most "experiences" disappoint

The experiential-technology field has a credibility problem, and it is self-inflicted. Case-study videos show flawless interactive walls, responsive installations and immersive rooms, filmed once, in perfect conditions, often before the public touched them. The lived reality is a touch surface that stopped registering by lunchtime, a motion sensor confused by a busy crowd, a projection washed out by a window nobody accounted for. The gap between the render and the reality is where reputations are made and lost — and it is almost never about the creative idea. It is about whether anyone engineered the experience to survive contact with real people, real light and real time.

This journal is written from the unfashionable side of that gap: the operations side. The ideas are the easy, exciting part. The hard part — designing interaction that works in a crowd, content that reads at the actual viewing distance, and an installation that recovers on its own when something inevitably hiccups — gets almost no airtime, because it does not make a good launch film. It is, however, the entire difference between a permanent installation and an expensive disappointment.

A bias toward the durable

Across the pieces here runs one conviction: a digital experience is a system that has to run unattended in public, and should be judged as such. The most beautiful interactive concept is worthless if it needs a technician babysitting it; the most modest screen wall is a triumph if it runs flawlessly for three years and nobody ever thinks about it.
